Protecting 11-year-old Cara Castino remains Eve Duncan’s highest priority in bestseller Johansen’s thrilling 20th novel featuring the Atlanta-based forensic sculptor (after Hide Away), the conclusion of a trilogy within the longer series that began with Shadow Play. Natalie Castino, Cara’s sociopathic mother, succeeds in abducting the girl from her hiding place in the Scottish Highlands and taking her to Moscow, where Natalie’s father lives. Eve fears that Cara might meet the same fate as the girl’s twin sister, Jenny, for whose death Natalie was responsible. In Russia, Eve joins forces with Cara’s special friend from the Highlands, Jock Gavin, in an effort to rescue Cara. Eve’s longtime love, former FBI agent Joe Quinn, lends support, but nothing goes as smoothly as it should, and Eve soon finds herself fighting for her life and the life of her unborn child. Full of mysticism and mystery, this fast-paced novel is sure to appeal to all fans of romantic suspense. Agent: Andrea Cirillo, Jane Rotrosen Agency.

Narrator Elisabeth Rodgers jumps right into this thriller, which features Eve Duncan, her friend Joe Quinn, and the rest of her crew. Once again, they face down sociopath Natalie Castino, the twisted woman who kidnapped her own daughter, Cara, taking the 11-year-old deep into Moscow to hand over to her vicious father, a member of the Russian mafia. Rodgers deftly delivers the plot's ebb and flow of tension. She also captures the mystical element in the story as Eve searches for the lost treasure of Loch Gaelkar, Scotland, which Natalie covets. There's nothing soft about Rodgers's performance as she depicts the sharp edges of psychopaths, ghosts, and trained killers. Listeners who start here will want to go back and hear the rest of Eve's adventures. M.B.K. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine
