Robert Whitfield is hardly the most engaging narrator, employing a straightforward delivery without flourishes or stylization. To his credit, however, he does not condescend. The novel traces a proud landowning family in India as the country breaks from British control. Whitfield does not shy from the distinctive Indian accent, and he delivers with great dignity. Perhaps if he were a more emphatic reader, it would be easier to attend to Davidar's novel, but the author is more responsible for the faults with this audiobook. Davidar seems more interested in educating readers about the culture of his native land than captivating them with his narrative gifts. M.O. (c) AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine
