Based on a true story, Harper's (The Baby Farm, 2013) richly detailed historical novel follows Charlotte Bird, a young nanny who comes to work for the Duke and Duchess of York in 1897. The children Mrs. Lola (as Charlotte is called) raises are a needy bunch. The two oldest, bullied by their former nanny and intimidated by their demanding father, cower and stutter. One boy needs leg braces; the youngest, Johnnie, has epileptic seizures that dismay the family. All need a firm but gentle hand. The duchess is worn out by childbearing and busy with diplomatic travels, so Charlotte is left to raise the children as her own. Harper's young nanny is a plucky heroine who is willing to face down the royals to defend and support her charges. As the country heads for war, Charlotte sacrifices her own chance at happiness to hold the family together. Veteran-author Harper fills her tale with exquisite details of clothing, habits, palace intrigue, and everyday life. Fans of period dramas will enjoy the engaging plot, well-drawn characters, and vivid setting.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
