For Elmore Leonard fans, THE BIG BOUNCE is a watershed work--it's the book that bridges the gap between Leonard's Westerns and his modern crime stories. In this novel, a petty thief is lured into big trouble by the mistress of a pickle company magnate. Though the story lacks elements popularized in his later works--most notably, his characters don't say "the unprintable" stuff--it is well populated with indelible Elmore Leonard characters and with moral themes that reappear in later works. Narrator Mark Hammer is no stranger to Leonard, and his gravelly tone and deliberate reading suit the material. Perhaps more than any other narrator of Leonard's works, he generates the feeling that this is the way the author himself might deliver the book. R.W.S. (c) AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine
