This sequel ot Jennie About to Be opens in 1809 with the tenacious young Englishwoman sailing toward Maddox, Maine, accompanied by her late husband Nigel's cousin, Alick Gilchrist. The two had fled from the Scottish Highlands afer Alick accidentally killed Nigel in a scuffle, for they feared being prosecuted for murder. Temporarily masquerading as Mr. and Mrs. Glenroy, the couple ensconce themselves at General Colin MacKenzie's residence, where Jennie intends to tutor the MacKenzie youngsters until she can travel home. Exigent situations delay her journey, however. Jennie discovers that she is carrying Nigel's child even while her amiable relationship with Alick deepens into love. Interesting glimpses of quaint rural life do not compensate for the meandering plot, or the confusion which may arise for those unfamiliar with this book's precursor. 20,000 first printing; $20,000 ad/promo.
