Larissa Owens loves Fool's Gold, CA; her job at the sports PR firm, Score; her multiple rescue causes; and her Ragdoll cat, Dyna. She definitely doesn't love her boss, ex-football star Jack McGarry, no matter what her mother says. Jack doesn't love her, either. They are best friends, depend on each other, and work perfectly together. Love would ruin everything, on that they absolutely agree. Then why are things suddenly different between them? VERDICT With her classic blend of lighthearted humor, intense emotional conflict, and a setting so real and appealing readers will want to start scoping out real estate, Mallery spins a masterly tale of two wary people afraid to risk their friendship for love. This is the third installment in the second back-to-back trilogy that is part of Mallery's wonderfully detailed "Fool's Gold" world. Mallery (Before We Kiss) lives in Seattle.

A woman with a heart of gold uses her Midas touch to humanize her boss and benefactor in Mallory's latest, light-hearted Fools Gold romance. Twenty-eight-year-old Larissa Owens is right-hand woman to former professional quarterback Jack McGarry, now an executive at Score, the PR firm he, two NFL friends, and Jack's ex-wife created. Besides being Jack's scheduler and the company's masseuse, Larissa has also been a mega-do-gooder for the past few months she's lived in Fool's Gold, California. From helping sick children to rescuing animals, Larissa has convinced Jack to fund her projects. When she finds a homeless teen, Percy, she talks Jack into taking the boy into his home, giving him a job at Score, and helping him get his GED. Larissa's family and friends worry that Larissa's love for Jack isn't reciprocated. Having lost his twin brother when they were teens, then having his parents leave him, Jack believes he's incapable of love. It takes reaching rock bottom and having Larissa and his friends rescue him to change Jack's mind.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
