Burrowes closes out her Victorian-era MacGregor series (The Bridegroom Wore Plaid, Once Upon a Tartan) in fine style, tickling fans with the reappearance of some old friends from her other series. After years in Canada, Asher MacGregor has finally returned to Scotland and his rightful position as Earl of Balfour. Duty requires him to take a wife and secure the succession, but his secret heartbreak leaves him indifferent until he is tasked with introducing an alluring, independent-minded American heiress to society. Miss Hannah Cooper is determined to avoid marriage—her wicked stepfather has been trying to maneuver his way into her money through potential husbands for several years—but with Asher’s love, there just might be a way to resolve the ocean of obligations that separates them. Burrowes has a knack for giving fresh twists to genre tropes and developing them in unexpected and delightful directions. This novel is a perfect example of her consistently excellent writing, deep and layered stories, and intelligent and compassionate characters. Agent: Steve Axelrod, Axelrod Literary Agency.

Sent to England under duress to land an acceptable husband, heiress Hannah Cooper, prickly and plagued with a limp, has no intention of marrying and can hardly wait to head home to Boston--sans husband--to make sure her family is safe from her scheming stepfather. But she must endure a Season first, and her host, Asher MacGregor, the new Earl of Balfour, who is also supposedly looking for a bride, is charged with seeing that all goes well. Although the chemistry between them flares, they both realize that their responsibilities lie on opposite sides of the Atlantic--unless they can find a solution. VERDICT A pair of seemingly ill-suited protagonists with more in common than they'd thought finally find trust and love in this engaging, deliciously sensual, superbly written romance by one of the genre's rising historical stars. Burrowes (Once Upon a Tartan) lives in rural Maryland.

As Burrowes continues her MacGregor series (Once Upon a Tartan, 2013), Hannah Cooper's Boston family sends her across the sea to London to make a good matchor else. Her tyrannical stepfather has trapped her family under his unpleasant rule. Yet rather than think of escape, Hannah wants only to get her inheritance and return to save her loved ones. Asher MacGregor, the new earl of Balfour, is not interested in debutantes but takes paying his debt seriously in the form of showing the Boston heiress the proper way to do things in London. They soon realize that they are the only match for each other, but they cannot figure out how to take care of their familial responsibilities. As usual, Burrowes brings strong conflict and emotion to a very appealing cast. Her secondary characters are as colorful as the hero and heroine, and readers will enjoy revisiting beloved characters, including the Windhams. And Asher's background and mixed-race heritage bring interesting facets to the time period and to this excellent series.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
