Susie Berneis offers an upbeat reading of Cooney's funny, touching novel. When Evie answers an ad to be a dog trainer at a rescue sanctuary, she's hired as a probationary trainer, but she's not expected to last. Berneis is convincing as Evie learns about the humans and canines who live and work at the Mountaintop School. She delivers a heartfelt narration, progressing from Evie's first encounters with the abused, abandoned dogs in her charge to her eventual understanding of animal behavior and her mastery of training techniques. A story filled with poignant tales of harrowing dog rescues will appeal to anyone who has ever loved a dog, and Berneis makes the emotionally damaged Evie both credible and likable. A young woman who yearns for adventure and a sense of belonging finds both at a remote animal-training retreat in this touching ninth novel from Cooney (Thanksgiving). After responding to an online job ad placed by “the Sanctuary,” Evie, an emotionally troubled 24-year-old, winds up as the newest (and only) trainee at a rehabilitative facility for rescue dogs located on a snowy mountaintop. She has a lot to learn about her canine charges, and about people as well, especially Mrs. Auberchon, the stern and defensive 10-year caretaker of the inn at the base of the mountain. Most of Evie’s coworkers believe her days are numbered, yet she bonds with and learns from teenage “Giant George” and others at the Sanctuary. Cooney’s good-natured narrative teaches readers about many different aspects of dog behavior and training alongside Evie, making the book ideal for animal aficionados. As Evie’s education progresses, she graduates from training sessions to dangerous rescue missions. She also learns more about Mrs. Auberchon, whose icy reserve masks an ongoing battle with inner demons. Dog lovers rejoice! Cooney has crafted an uncomplicated, feel-good, canine-filled tale of cross-generational friendship, healing, and solidarity.
