Anne Smythe runs a healing spa for rich women of the ton while pretending to be a widow rather than the bastard daughter of an earl. She is not happy when Lady Eleanor Chamberlin leaves her injured brother, Stephen, with her, but Anne hides him, puts up with his bad temper, and ultimately falls in love with him. They have a sexually fulfilling affair despite their knowledge that they have no future together because of class differences, but one of the funnier subplots is Stephen's attempt to divest himself of a prior fiancee once he decides that he must find a way to marry Anne after all. Unfortunately, one of his prior paramours hires Anne's next-door neighbor to punish the lovers, and he, private constable and sadistic pervert that he is, is delighted to oblige. The entertaining side affairs include a lesbian relationship, and all in all, this is a good sexy read for Regency fans as well as erotic romance fans who like a little plot with the sex.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2004, American Library Association.)
