Gisela Cramer is an American living with her cousin Ella, her cousin's two daughters, and their ailing grandfather in eastern Germany at the end of World War II. Receiving word that the Russian Army is about to invade Prussia, Ella begs Gisela to flee to Berlin and take her two daughters with her. On the way, Gisela encounters Mitch, an escaped British prisoner of war who is posing as an SS guard in a German refugee camp. Gisela and the girls pretend to be Mitch's German family to protect his safety in the camp as anti-British sentiment runs high. Gisela's and Mitch's journey to safety is long and seemingly never-ending, but in spite of the turmoil that surrounds them, they manage to find love and hope. VERDICT Tolsma's ("Snow on the Tulips") second historical novel is a compelling and fast-paced tale about the atrocities and tremendous losses endured by those marked forever by World War II. The theme of faith despite all odds will resonate with readers. Recommended for fans of Rosamunde and Robin Pilcher, Kate Morton, and historical romances.
