In paranormal romance author Kenyon's debut hardcover (after Unleash the Night
), her New Orleans–based Dark-Hunters have moved to Seattle, where they continue to battle Daimons who suck both blood and souls from humans. Love doesn't come easy for these tortured, hunky heroes, as shown by Ravyn Contis, a shape-shifting Dark-Hunter, who was betrayed by his first lifemate. Now his newest love interest, reporter Susan Michaels, is allergic to him—or, more specifically, to his cat form. She's also none too happy to find herself thrown into the midst of a war between Seattle's Dark-Hunters and a race of über-powerful Daimons. Tough, sarcastic Susan rises to the occasion and even possesses enough martial arts knowledge to hold her own in a face-off with Daimons. Some readers will question the convenient revelation of her battle skills as well as her bring-'em-on bravado, but most will take this in stride and enjoy the taut action and jaunty humor. Though the story unfolds predictably, it contains a delicious balance of suspense and sensuality and provides a tantalizing setup for the sequel. 200,000 printing; 7-city author tour.

In Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series, Susan Michaels, former hard-boiled newspaper reporter, now finds herself writing stories about alien babies and paranormal sightings. Ravyn Contis, a Dark-Hunter who can change into a black cat, is captured by the Daimons, who eat the souls of humans and are the sworn enemies of Ravyn's kind. Assigned to run down the story of an immortal, shape-shifting cat, Susan ends up adopting Ravyn as a pet and becoming caught up in his eternal battle for survival. Maggie-Meg Reed narrates in an intense tone that draws listeners into these dark adventures as Ravyn and Susan battle the Daimons. M.B.K. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine

Reporter Susan Michaels has fallen on hard times and is working the UFO/alien abduction beat in Seattle when she adopts a cat that draws her into the world of shape-shifters, dark hunters, vampires, and ancient feuds. It doesn't take long for her to throw herself into the middle of it all. As is typical of the genre, romance and steamy sex are in abundance. Carrington MacDuffie does justice to the sexual tension between Michaels and her vampire slayer. MacDuffie brings alive their breathless encounters, as well as the intrigue of the plot, with a narration that is smooth and well paced. She appreciates the humorous sarcasm of the characters while presenting their conflicts seriously. J.E.M. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine
