Jayne continues to delight with the quick and amusing third Underworld Detection Agency novel (after Under Attack). Sophie Lawson is the only human case worker at the UDA and the secret holder of the Vessel of Souls. This time she has to find out why her boss is acting strangely and whether it’s related to the recent murders of various supernatural creatures, including two who visited the Agency. New readers will find this an accessible entry to the series, while fans will enjoy the return of Sophie’s coworker Nina, a fashion-obsessed vampire who’s decided to write vampire romances, and Nina’s nephew, Vlad, now Sophie’s immediate superior at the Agency and still obsessed with the Vampire Empowerment and Restoration Movement. Sophie also gets time to moon over both of her love interests: hunky fallen angel Alex Grace and handsome human Guardian Will Sherman. Sophie, neither supermodel nor hapless ditz, has a clunky charm that perfectly matches the vivid, funny setting.
