A talented ensemble featuring John Moffat performs Agatha Christie's favorite murder mystery in her Nursery Rhyme series. Hercule Poirot, as always, thinks his way through a maze of multiple suspects, red herrings, and twisty turns. When Poirot's unassuming dentist turns up dead, murdered moments after Poirot leaves his office, Christie's sleuth is outraged. He liked that dentist! The production captures London of the 1940s with a combination of evocative scene setting and clipped British accents that bring the era vividly to life. The production quality is wonderful, with sound effects that enrich the listening experience without getting in the way. Further, the meticulous portrayals of the many characters make for excellent entertainment. D.G. (c) AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine

Hugh Fraser, known to TV audiences as Captain Hastings on "Mystery's" Hercule Poirot series, has once again recorded a vintage Christie detective story. This story could have been titled THE CASE OF THE MURDERED DENTIST except that the author was going through her phase of using nursery rhyme titles to give clues. (First clue, "buckle.") Hugh Fraser does a passably good job of presenting the great Belgian detective, although one misses David Suchet's portrayal. Fraser's delivery is well paced, the diction clear, and the characters well delineated. This classic mystery has stood the test of time. Audio listeners will enjoy hearing an old favorite. D.L.G.
