August (authors Lorin Oberweger and Veronica Rossi) delivers a solid new adult trilogy launch. Aspiring filmmaker Mia Galliano, the daughter and muse of a noted artist, wants to be successful without leveraging her mother’s name. Ethan Vance, college soccer star turned marketer, is equally determined to make it on his own. Meeting in a bar, Mia and Ethan enjoy a hot hook-up, but what both figure will be a no-strings-attached fling quickly turns complicated when they’re tapped as interns competing for a single full-time position at upstart dating site Boomerang. Despite its mission, the company has a strict no-dating policy, forcing the couple to try (in vain) to deny their sizzling chemistry. Mia and Ethan alternate viewpoints in this engaging story of young up-and-comers balancing responsibilities and desires.

August, the pen name for "Under the Never Sky" trilogy author Veronica Rossi and editor/author Lorin Oberweger, sets the first book in this new-adult series in the world of Internet dating site Boomerang.com. Mia Galliano and Ethan Vance hook up after meeting in a bar. All is well and good, but things get difficult when the pair realize they're both interning at Boomerang and vying for the one job available at the end of the summer. Mia is an aspiring filmmaker and desires the position to prove she can make it on her own as a professional; Ethan just needs a paycheck now that his college days are done and his student loans are looming. Competing with each other is bad enough, but the powerful attraction they feel creates more complications than either wants. VERDICT This debut entry for August in the new adult genre is refreshingly charming. Absent are the tortured baggage tropes that permeate the category, which is a welcome change. Readers who enjoyed Megan McCafferty's "Jessica Darling" series (especially the later ones set in college) will want to read this.--Jane Jorgenson, Madison P.L., WI

In this cute, funny read, two recent college grads wake up naked in bed, hungover, and confused. Little do they realize that they are also both new interns at an online dating company. They must put their sexual sparks aside and play ball to see who wants the job most. (LJ 7/14)
