Juliana Scott has just moved back home to Tidewater, Va., to get away from the sense of overwhelming pain and fear she felt in the big city—all due to her unasked-for ability to talk to the dead. Cities draw large numbers of the departed, all of them vocal and needy. Tidewater is small and sparsely populated, so it’s a shock when Jules is visited by a very strident, angry, newly deceased young woman who wants something from her. The visitation pushes Jules into the arms of Det. Seth English, her neighbor, in a disastrous series of slapstick-worthy errors and misunderstandings. Behre’s exuberant debut paranormal romance is lighthearted and easygoing, with a slow-moving subplot that promises to spark future books. Agent: Cascade Literary Agency.

Losing your keys and being lured by ghosts is no excuse for climbing through the window of your sexy cop neighbor's apartment. Yet when Juliana Scott does just that, still dressed from her college reunion "Pimp and Ho" costume party, Det. Seth English naturally assumes the worst. But Jules has more problems than one hot cop. Not only is she haunted by the dead, but when a mix-up and a murder put her under police suspicion and set a killer on her trail, she is forced to rely on the skeptical Seth. A psychic heroine wary of sharing her secrets, a pragmatic hero determined to learn whats she's hiding, and a plethora of secondary characters (dearly departed and otherwise) combine in a lighthearted yet spine-tingling turn that is just plain fun. VERDICT Lively, funny, and fresh, this engaging debut novel is just the thing for readers who want their mystery thrillers with a ghostly twist and an offbeat sense of humor. Behre lives in King George, VA.
