Beverley’s long-running Company of Rogues Regency series continues (after A Shocking Delight) with a novel that eschews steamy love scenes to focus on character development and a swiftly moving plot. Lady Hermione Merryhew is traveling with her nephews to her great-uncle’s estate. As they rest at an inn, she receives an unlikely visitor, Lt. Mark Thayne. He begs Hermione to hide him from the law, and she agrees, mostly because she has kept the brass button from his uniform for the six years since their brief encounter at a ball. Thayne has infiltrated a band of revolutionaries; Hermione believes Thayne to be a common thief, and he decides not to correct her assumption, as he thinks the truth will put her in danger. The mystery surrounding the threat of revolution adds heavy suspense to the burgeoning romance. Beverley’s brilliantly drawn protagonists shine in a story that puts equal emphasis on intrigue and love. Agent: Margaret Ruley, Rotrosen Agency.

Lady Hermione Merryhew has never forgotten the handsome lieutenant who stole a kiss from her at her first ball. The scruffy fugitive thief who breaks into her room at the inn where she is staying turns out to be the same man. Working as a free agent for the government, Mark Thayne, Viscount Faringay, has infiltrated the Crimson Band, a dangerous group of radicals bent on stirring up violence and revolution across England, and at last he has the proof he needs to bring them down. He doesn't want to involve Hermione, but when he is forced to entrust her with a letter, he puts her in a vicious killer's sights, setting the scene for the dangerous adventure that follows. VERDICT Swift action, realistic characters, compelling prose, and a fascinating view of the political unrest of the times make this another stellar addition to Beverley's "Rogues" series and one fans won't want to miss. Beverley (A Shocking Delight) lives along England's Devon Coast.
