Starred review from November 15, 2014
After her husband abandoned them, Gin Lightly and her young daughter, Raine, never stayed in one place very long. By the time Raine reaches her senior year in high school and their car breaks down in Banister Falls, WI, she begs her mother to let her finish an entire year in one place. Dan Moretti has never left his hometown, enjoying his job as firefighter and mentoring a teen named Cody, whose firefighter father was killed in a blaze. When Raine and Cody are assigned a school project, they eventually become intimate. Upon learning of her daughter's pregnancy, Gin's first reaction is to move again before the gossip starts in town, yet her attraction to Dan compels her to stay. Together, they struggle to rely on God to mend their broken families. VERDICT Springer, winner of the American Christian Fiction Writers 2009 Book of the Year for Family Treasures, infuses her engrossing narrative with believable characters whose personal struggles ring true. The issues the author raises, and her readable, unpretentious style makes this an excellent choice for CF book discussion groups.
