Kashdan (psychology, George Mason Univ.; Curious?: Discover the Missing Ingredient to a Fulfilling Life) and Biswas-Diener (The Courage Quotient: How Science Can Make You Braver) argue that negative emotions such as anger and anxiety are necessary and useful to live a complete life. Citing studies from their own research as well as that by others, the authors include everyday examples in education, romance, and sports to show that "bad" emotions are good for people. They insist that positive feelings can lead to setbacks and that mindlessness may be better than mindfulness. The authors make a compelling and thought-provoking argument. VERDICT Recommended for undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, scholars studying psychology, and anyone interested in learning about human behavior.--Tina Chan, SUNY Oswego
