Big Knits, Big Needles

Knits made with very thick yarn are trendy right now, not only for their fashionable look but also for the relative speed with which they can be created. The patterns here encompass a wide range of knitwear, including coats, cowls, mittens, ponchos, and sweaters. Many items are designed to go together, such as a sweater-and-mitten combo and a top with coordinated cowl, hat, and wrist warmers. Because chunky yarn can be heavy when knit, many of the recommended yarns are lightweight chainette yarns (which are made in a hollow tube, like i-cord). The thicker the yarn and larger the needles, the more yarn is required, so many of these garments use upwards of 1,000 yards. Projects are knit in the round whenever possible, and those with multiple pieces are knit together to avoid bulky seams. Brief step-by-step instructions for fundamental techniques are illustrated with clear photos, though the very basics, such as how to knit and purl, are not covered.
